Dated countertops are out, but you don’t want to renovate due to micro-trends, right?
To choose a stone material that will be around for a long time, it’s important to consider several factors, such as your lifestyle (do you have kids?), your color preferences long-term, the durability of materials, and maintenance.
Quartz countertops have become popular due to their durability, clean and simple look, and generally low maintenance. White quartz typically has two patterns, Calacatta, which is more of a spider-web Esq. veining, while Carrara has a more splotchy pattern. If you are in the market for marble but are not interested in keeping up with the maintenance or paying a pretty penny for it, quartz is a stunning alternative and is made to have the same feel as marble.
Porcelain stones are engineered along with quartz. Created from a combination of porcelain, silica, and feldspar, this material is mixed and fired at high temperatures, allowing it to be heat resistant and extremely durable. They can be so extremely durable in fact, that some fabricators do not install porcelain. Be sure to find a fabricator who works with porcelain before committing to this gorgeous stone!
Quartzite is a natural stone, made from sandstone that is altered due to high pressure and heat from the earth. Quartzite is similar to the hardness of granite, but will typically not etch when exposed to acidic liquids. Quartzite comes in some incredible patterns and colors. You can spot quartzite based on its thickness and how its patterns resemble other natural elements such as the desert or the ocean. Ask your fabricator how they can customize the edge to suit your aesthetic.
Marble is a dream. There is a reason why it is so popular. Marble countertops have incredible richness and character, drawing people to them. They carry a classic and timeless look, and with proper maintenance, will withstand the test of time. We’re not exaggerating when we say that they require maintenance. Marble countertops will stain if they are not cleaned properly. Marble countertops are also prone to etching and will show as scratched if they are exposed to acid for a long period. With this in mind, marble will be ideal for you only if you have the lifestyle to maintain it.
Finally, granite is the other main natural stone that we carry. Granite is known for its durability. Created from the earth’s magma, granite can last for generations if installed properly. Granite generally resists chipping, cracking, and scratching. Granite countertops would be a great addition in either a kitchen a bathroom, or even outside.
